TAKE THE CHALLENGE

Each fall, elementary, middle and high school students from Pinellas County schools, churches, community centers, clubs and other organizations form Brain Bowl teams to compete at the local, regional and state level. The county/regional competition is held Saturday, Dec. 15. Teams winning at the county and regional levels advance to the state level and may be eligible for scholarships offered by colleges and universities in Florida.

Word Wizard Definition

Students in grades 3-8 compete to spell and answer sentence completion and analogy questions on words taken from the FCAT vocabulary lists published by the Florida Education Fund.

Laws of Life Essay Contest

Students in grades 3-12 compete in this contest that requires them to exercise writing and critical thinking skills to meet or exceed grade-level expectations defined by the Sunshine State Standards.

National Achievers Society Voices Speech and Oratory Contest

Students in grades 9-12 compete in this contest that requires them to exercise public speaking, writing and critical thinking skills as they form opinions on thought-provoking national and international issues.

Black History and Culture Brain Bowl

Students in grades 6–12 explore college-level literary and historical texts that reflect the rich diversity of voices and experiences that have shaped the United States. By critically examining the contributions of African Americans and other historically marginalized communities, students build analytical reading, writing, and discussion skills aligned with college and career readiness standards. This inclusive approach fosters a deeper understanding of American history and literature while promoting cultural awareness, empathy, and academic excellence.

Math Brain Bowl

Designed to increase interest in math and to develop problem solving ability through challenging questions from the FCAT, SAT and other material. Competition levels are:

  • 6-8 grade (FCAT)
  • 9-10 grade (FCAT)
  • 11-12 grade (SAT)
