In response to Tampa Bay’s rapid growth and development, St. Petersburg College has launched a new Bachelor of Applied Science in Construction Technology to meet the area’s rising workforce demands.
The Bachelor of Applied Science in Construction Technology is designed to prepare graduates for leadership roles in the construction field, including project managers, superintendents, field engineers, cost estimators and infrastructure technicians. Developed in collaboration with local industry leaders, the degree aligns closely with current workforce needs across Tampa Bay.
Thomas R. Burket“This new program represents a critical step forward in addressing both current and future workforce demands in the construction industry,” said Thomas R. Burket, President of PJ Callaghan Construction and chair of SPC’s Building Arts Advisory Committee. “It reflects a forward-thinking approach to closing the skills gap while investing in the long-term sustainability and innovation of our industry. It will be a game changer for students, employers and the broader economy.”
Coursework emphasizes project management, adaptive reuse, coastal construction, and sustainable building practices, equipping students with the technical expertise and practical experience needed to lead complex projects.
“There’s a mismatch between job seekers and hiring managers,” said Darrell Carr, lead faculty for the bachelor’s program. “Employers need professionals who can lead projects, coordinate teams and deliver results. This program prepares graduates to step into those roles and contribute immediately.”
The bachelor’s degree builds on SPC’s Associate in Science degree in Building Design and Construction Management and Associate in Arts transfer plans. Students can also earn certificates in Sustainable Construction Technology and Field Survey Technician, and industry-recognized certifications in OSHA 30 and the Association of General Contractors Certified Associate Constructor.
“Our programs are a springboard for students and their careers,” added Carr. “They don’t just learn about construction — they learn how to lead projects and build what others only design.”
Dr. Mohammad Tamimi, Executive Program Director of Engineering, Manufacturing and Building Arts at SPC, said the launch reflects the College’s continued investment in high-demand academic programs.
“This new degree is another step in fulfilling our commitment to serve students and strengthen our community,” said Tamimi.
By combining hands-on learning with industry-aligned curriculum, the program positions graduates to help shape the future of construction across the region.
