Launched in 2016, LEAP Tampa Bay and its collaborative partners focus on breaking down the barriers that often prevent individuals from pursuing higher education. With a strong emphasis on providing students with information on grants, scholarships and tuition reimbursement programs, the organization ensures that students who may have previously thought college was out of reach have access to the financial resources and support they need to succeed.

“Some of the biggest barriers students face include a lack of awareness of available opportunities and perceived financial barriers. Many students don’t have access to information about postsecondary education options,” said Dr. Jerrica Peets, LEAP Program Manager. “This is why establishing College and Career centers in all Pinellas County high schools was so important. These centers help increase access to information and raise awareness. LEAP played a key role in helping establish these centers to better support students.”

SPC, as a leading educational institution in the region, aligns perfectly with LEAP’s mission by offering a variety of programs, degrees and certificates that cater to the evolving needs of the Tampa Bay area’s workforce. By 2031, it is projected that more than 70% of the jobs in the United States will require postsecondary education and/or training.

Together with SPC, LEAP and its collaborative network of partners help students by offering college planning services, scholarship opportunities, student support resources and assistance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process.

“Our ongoing partnership aims to continue supporting SPC’s efforts in helping students earn postsecondary credentials at all levels, including Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees, bachelor’s degrees, as well as technical certifications," Peets said. "The biggest opportunities for growth lie in expanding access to these programs and ensuring that students are equipped with the skills necessary for success in the workforce.”

Filling out the FAFSA is a critical first step in determining eligibility for financial aid, including federal grants, work-study programs and loans. LEAP provides valuable resources and guidance to help students complete the FAFSA, emphasizing the importance of this step in securing financial assistance and reducing the long-term cost of education.

LEAP also encourages students to explore Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways and training, which offer shorter-term, affordable credentials that can lead to well-paying jobs and fulfilling careers. Interest in CTE programs has been on the rise for several years now, and colleges like SPC have developed programs to meet that demand.

Many CTE programs are eligible for financial aid, and SPC plays a vital role in providing these opportunities. Thanks to the support that students receive from LEAP and SPC, students can pursue careers in high-demand fields like construction, health care and technology, addressing the region’s skilled workforce shortages.

Ultimately, the SPC and LEAP partnership is not just about helping students earn degrees — it’s about fostering community growth, furthering student success and ensuring businesses in the Tampa Bay area have access to a qualified, educated workforce. By working together, SPC and LEAP Tampa Bay are paving the way for a brighter future for both students and the regional economy.
