As Florida marks Florida College System Month, St. Petersburg College is highlighting its role in workforce education, student success and economic impact across the Tampa Bay region.
Founded to serve the community it calls home, SPC will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2027, marking nearly a century of academic excellence, career training and community leadership.
The Florida College System, made up of 28 institutions, provides accessible, high-quality higher education and workforce training statewide. This year, Florida earned national recognition as No. 1 in the nation for workforce education, driven by record-breaking Career and Technical Education enrollment, apprenticeship growth and strategic workforce investments.
“SPC has always been about creating opportunity and serving our community,” said SPC President Dr. Tonjua Williams. “From our roots as a community college to our growth as a state college offering bachelor's degrees, we continue to meet students where they are in life, equip them for in-demand careers and support the economic vitality of Tampa Bay.”
SPC Expands Workforce Training Through Industry Partnerships
SPC’s partnerships with local employers help bring Florida’s workforce leadership to life. The College’s recent $1.1 million partnership with Jabil will expand advanced manufacturing training.
SPC’s soldering program, launched in partnership with industry leaders including Jabil and LeaderTech demonstrates the impact of short-term workforce training and industry-recognized credentials, as all 12 students in the most recent course were hired immediately.
Pablo Acosta, a welder at LeaderTech, said the program gave him skills that translated directly into career advancement.
“I wanted to express my sincere gratitude for the time I spent in the soldering class,” said Acosta. “The experience was incredibly rewarding, and I truly appreciated how innovative and well-equipped the facilities were. The instructor’s hands-on approach and willingness to teach made a significant difference. Moreover, the skills I gained, along with my certificate, have already opened opportunities for a higher wage at my current job, Leader Tech. Overall, it was an enriching and valuable experience.”
Belinthia Berry, Dean of Workforce Development at SPC, emphasized, “Collaborating with industry leaders like Jabil ensures our programs stay aligned with current workforce needs, creating real opportunities for students to earn credentials, build skills and step confidently into high-demand careers.”
John Kraus, Vice President of Operations, North America at Jabil, emphasized the importance of investing in local talent.
“By investing in SPC’s programs, we’re building a pipeline of in-demand talent equipped to jump into key roles from day one; roles that can be the start of exciting, fulfilling careers in a fast-growing industry.”
SPC’s Economic Impact in Tampa Bay
The impact of St. Petersburg College extends far beyond the classroom. SPC contributes $3.5 billion annually to the Tampa Bay economy, supports more than 37,000 jobs and generates $14.20 in community benefit for every $1 invested.
Through its students, alumni and workforce programs, SPC continues to support economic development, job growth and career readiness across Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco and Hernando counties.
“As Florida continues to lead the nation in workforce education, SPC is proud to demonstrate that leadership locally,” said Dr. Williams. “Through innovative programs, strategic partnerships and student-centered support, we prepare the next generation for high-wage, in-demand careers while serving our community and our state.”
Looking Ahead: SPC’s Commitment to Student Success and Workforce Development
As SPC approaches its centennial in 2027, the College remains focused on expanding access to education, strengthening workforce pathways and supporting the communities it serves.
Through innovative academic programs, employer partnerships and a continued commitment to student success, St. Petersburg College reflects the mission of the Florida College System: transforming lives, building the workforce and creating lasting impact across Florida.
